Gakuji is a free, open-source desktop application built and maintained by one person. Using it does not create an account, a subscription, or any ongoing relationship between you and its author — it is software you download and run, nothing more.

Gakuji is provided “as is,” without warranty of any kind, express or implied — including any warranty that it will be accurate, reliable, uninterrupted, or fit for a particular purpose. You use it entirely at your own risk.

Word readings, kanji breakdowns, part-of-speech tags, JLPT levels, and translations exist to help with language learning, not to serve as an authoritative reference. They can be wrong. Don’t rely on Gakuji anywhere an inaccurate reading or translation would matter — professional, academic, or otherwise.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the author of Gakuji is not liable for any damages or losses — direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential — arising from your use of, or inability to use, the app. That covers lost data, lost time, and anything else that goes wrong on your machine after installing it.

Any text you paste into Gakuji — lyrics included — is processed locally on your own machine; Gakuji does not upload it, store it remotely, or send it anywhere. You’re responsible for having the right to use whatever text you paste in. Gakuji doesn’t host, distribute, or claim any ownership over that text, and isn’t affiliated with the artists, labels, or publishers behind any lyrics you choose to read.

Gakuji’s Anki export talks to a copy of Anki running on your own machine, over AnkiConnect, if you have it installed and running. That connection stays local to your computer — Gakuji doesn’t communicate with Anki’s servers, and isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by the Anki project.

Gakuji has no account system, no sync, and no analytics or tracking built into the app. The only network activity is checking GitHub for new releases. Your reading, notes, and bookmarks don’t leave your computer through Gakuji.

Gakuji’s source is public on GitHub, under the license in that repository. Reading it, forking it, and building your own copy are all fair game under those terms.

This page may be updated as the app changes. Continuing to use Gakuji after a change means you accept the current version of it.
